Aviation

Acknowledging the risks

Radical extremists and terrorists have transformed the face of aviation, starting notably back in the mid-1970s and then dramatically following the attacks of 11 September 2001. Now there is risk terrorists may seek to place an armed suicide bomber or an explosive device on aircraft anywhere in the world, by means of crew, passenger, airport worker or cargo. By reasons of treaty arrangements, support for UN resolutions and troop deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, Australia’s risk has been unavoidably heightened. As a consequence, interlocking defensive security rings need to be drawn around each airport to deter such attempts. A loss of confidence in the safety and security of airlines would erode public confidence and have dramatic economic consequences in terms of trade, the free movement of people and Australia’s reputation.

Creating the solution

To protect against determined and dangerous risks such as terrorism, there must be comprehensive passenger, carry-on and checked baggage screening to ensure that explosive and dangerous materials are not introduced into secure areas of the airport or on to aircraft. Airports are major areas of activity with large workforces and a constant stream of passengers and visitors, so constantly adjusting and layered forms of credentialing and access control are required. These need to be supplemented by vehicle and foot patrols, linked inter-actively with CCTV coverage: all directed through a Control Room, which is backed up off-site. SNP Security’s CCTV system has won international awards for its performance leading services and value. Passenger screening is intensive, requiring not only screening of all persons entering the secure area but also scanning of all accompanied baggage, as well as random explosives trace-testing. Cargo and unaccompanied baggage has to be screened before it is permitted in the secure area of the airport. SNP Security has managed the security gateway to Sydney Airport for over 40 years. No challenge in Australian airport security is greater or more intensive. Additionally SNP Security manages security at Canberra, Albury, Port Macquarie and Newcastle airports.
